To create this model I had to collection all of the measurements from the Waverly theatre which I then place onto CAD to give ma a technical ground plan which I could used to start my design process.

I designed my set from using my primary and secondary research which was  a main part in the process because it has allowed me to create an accurate and interesting design. I have gone out to see churches, been to a food bank, went to council areas for flats, read a range of books and even used pictures from my trip to Rome.

I was then able to create mock up version of a range of design ideas that I antically had. This helped me quickly see my ideas in an 1:25 scale as well as on the Waverley ground plan model.

When I was ready to make the model I manly used a lot of filer to create the stone effect for the church and tiles for the Bootle floor. I also used materials such as wood, foam board, mount board, fabrics, wire and coloured lighting gel. All of these elements helped me achieve my final look which I feel shows my core ideas visually and how I would want my set to be made.

CAD drawings

Chosen seating layout.

Using the pervious chair CAD drawing I was able to take those measurements and make 150 seats in a set of 15 seats per row to choice the seating  layout in the theatre.

The use of doing this helped me know what space I had left to create the set around and how it would effect the audience or be best for the audience to see.

I also made the Waverly ground plan including the black curtain (in green) from the measurements I went and gathered. This is the main feature to my drawings as it creates the foundation to my design and what I have to work with.

Waverly Theatre ground plan with side elevations

Here is the completed measurements and ground plan of the Waverly theatre indulging side sections of two of the theatre walls.

These side sections helped me create a front elevation of the set design as well as knowing what measurements I could use for the height of the theatre.

The side elevations are of the two back walls of the theatre which I useful because that is were I decided to place my sets. Naples stage right and Bootle stage left (looking from the main entrance)

Here are the final presented front elevations of the Bootle and napels set.

The front elevations shows the correct measurements of the main structures for the set. it also help shows how the set would look like against the walls or even looking from above on the floor.

Behind the napels set that would be a flood of portfolio lights to shine onto the stained glass which would create the multi coloured effect on the floor.

The lights also shined the stained glass patterns onto the Bootle set.

The Bootle set also contained a donut revolve which you can see the figure place on top of it.

I have also created construction drawings of two major pieces of set. One from napels and one for Bootle.

I have provide the detailing, measurements and some assembling sections on both drawings.

Sketchbook work

Naples research
Picture18.png

For the Naples set design I had looked at Rome architecture from my own personal pictures taken in at Vatican City as well as pictures from books.

I specifically looked at Iconic pillars as this was the style in that era. These pillars were the main set pieces on the set as well as the stained glass window.

I wanted the church to look incomplete so I made walls surrounding the set that were half built as well as one of the pillars capital not finished. I also put some sculptural work of body's on a scaffolding as there were loads of  human bodies made out of stone placed inside churches.

Another main feature was the hanging of a dead body that I have in the corner by the paining to show how Caravaggio tied a dead body from the street up next to his painting to allow him to paint a real dead human.

Liverpool- Bottle research
Picture19.png

The other half of the stage was going to be the bottle set which shows a huge difference in style and architecture to the Naples set. I have halved it because it allows the scene to be more clear in locations and characters.

I looked at books of pictures of Liverpool, flats to rent in bottle and looked around the outside of Nottingham to get a feel and inspiration on how to design the flat for the set. From this I came up with idea of brick work, steel beams and bared windows which was the main features for the set which helped create a poor, eerily aesthetics.

I also added in a donut revolve to allow different locations such as the food bank and bolthole we easily shown and changed.

Costume designs

Caravaggio
Picture2.png

I did research on costumes in the 1600 Naples which came up with the same type of clothes used in other cultures but also allowed me to see Italian style of patterns , shapes and colours.

The main features was neck coverings that either was tucked under the surcoat or covering the whole shoulder and chest of the surcoat or doublet. Attached to the doublets were also mainly puffed shoulder paddings that shown some sort of intricate pattern.

I didn't use  most of these styles shown for Caravaggio but I did use it for Marchese and Lavina.

For Caravaggio I wanted to go with minimal clothing to show his Skeleton body and self inflicted wounds. I also wanted his body to be fragile to show that he hasn't been eating because hes fixed on completing the painting.

Having he body on show can also express how dirty he has become and the fact that he would use his on body as a paint pallet.

The clothes he wear are ripped and covered in paint, blood and dirt. He would always wear shorts that are his under garments and at the start if the paly he  would wear an oversized t shirt or a scarf that would be used as a bandaged later on.

Marchese

For Marchese I wanted him to be very posh and clean within his clothing.

I also wanted him to be wearing lots of colours to show he is wealthy. I chose to have add pumpkin pants to a doublet with tucked in neck collar.

I have portrayed this character as a fat old man with arrange of jewellery and accessories to show he can be stuck up and well put together.

Lavina
Finished design
Picture5.png

I used most of my female research form the 1600 hundreds Italy to decided what would suit Lavina and to match her line of work.

I chose for her to have a middle corset that outlines her  figure and allows here to easily open the garment to show off her body.

For some of the play she would be wearing nothing but a red long skirt to help Caravaggio paint her.

The reason her skirt is red is to symbolise lover, danger and affection that she has in her life and the job she is in.

Leon
Finished design
Picture14.png

For Leon I created two different outfits to show that he has two styles, an old young at heart style and a comfy style.

One of the t shirt is like Mickeys which incudes the Everton flag. This highlight he is a fan of the football and the shirt will be an old one from when he was younger. This indicates that he hasn't got a lot of money and has to wear old clothing. With this I added a Trent coat to show that he also has class.

Another outfit shows a checked patterned hat and blanket which also matches with Mickey's jacket. The farmers jumper and dungarees show that he still has some playful nature in him as well as having to work most of his life.

I have connected most of Mickey's clothing to Leon to express how they both are the same type of person and how Leon is changing Mikey to understand his way of life.

I also man Mickey to look like a hip teen with curly fun hair and wearing the fasinable clothing style in the 90s.

He has three different clothing designs that changes in the food bank  and in the bolthole to which he gets them covered in blood.
