Cosmology Installation
The designing
When starting this project we were able to see one of the library's that the art peices will be toured in. This helped us with the design layout and overall concept.
We also looked at the children's books for inspiration to do with texture, colours, shapes and words.
We then came up with the idea of having the planets being shown as tents that the children can enter, however we didn't have a long time frame to achieve this so we have decided to make the planets to human scale size and added features depending on the elements of that planet.
Making section
Here is mars which was 20cm ball, covered in sand to give a rough and uneven texture and then painted red, yellow and orange for details.
This is Jupiter which is a green parasol which we spray painted and painted to try and resemble the patterns of Jupiter. This inside is painted like the storm and the fabric hanging on the edges are to show the storm as well.
Children can sit under the planet and play with the fabric.
We paper Mache balloons to create the shape for earth and Venus, however they failed so we had to make newspaper balls which we then coated in thermal heat sensitive paint.
I also added final quick details to try and represent some patterns of the planet.
The blue paint on earth turned green in the places heat was added to and the red turned to yellow on Venus.
Here is an image of the Mercury planet that I spray painted silver then added some little different shades of colour to add some detail.
These are the plates mars and mercury were placed in to which I painted to look like the galaxy to add some colour and fun to the design.
Here is Neptune which was a beach ball that was covered in blue tissue paper to which I added some spiral and quick lines of detail to represent the shapes on Neptune.
To make Saturn we attached hamster tunnels together to create the ring which we then covered in sticky tinfoil paper.
The ring then went around a chusion which was made with a blanket that had the image of saturn printed on it .
I made a ball and painted it to look like a rock which could be used by the children to push around the ring as well.
